In 1896, new Olympic Games began in Athens, Greece. Almost 250 athletes from 14 nations competed in 43 events. They were held every four years. But there were no Games during the two world wars.There are stories in Greek mythology that say Heracles, the son of Zeus, started the Games. In Roman mythology, he is called Hercules, and Zeus is called Jupiter. The old Olympic Games were held every four years between August 6 and September 19. They took place in Olympia, Greece. So, they were called the Olympics.
